Houston Mayor Bill White enters the Texas governor's race. He's my mayor.
“Shouldn't we be the state that leads the nation and not leaves the nation?” he asked, getting in a swipe at Perry's occasional overtures to Texas independence. White said he wanted to “brighten the star” in the Lone Star state by propelling Texas to the top of the nation in high school graduation rates and “hold a governor accountable” for poor performance in that and other areas.
He pledged to lower electric rates, to keep members of his staff as governor from taking “lucrative” jobs as lobbyists and appoint people to boards or commissions that are not campaign contributors. White touted some of the hallmarks of his administration on energy, environmental and ethics issues. He also made an effort to cast his critics as “career” politicians who only wish to belittle the state, a charge that will most likely be leveled back in his direction as he criticizes the state's posture under Perry.
He's a strong candidate and would be a good governor. I'm glad he's running. He gets my vote.
But he's not well known outside Houston, and suffers a little from the "kinda boring sensible old guy" affect. He's going to need funds from Democrats outside the state to finance the kind of campaign needed to get him elected. Will he get it? I doubt it. Which is too bad.

The Republicans and the Saudi Arabians
The Brits take aim at the climate change deniers, lumping the Saudi's in the same camp as the GOP! Have mercy!
( I have heard some say that the hacked e-mails were a concerted watergate theft style effort to derail the climate conference. )

Economic Development
I find it utterly fascinating that with just a few thousand dollars you can buy pumps and pipes and build a water system that gives small communities in Afghanistan clean water. For a few thousand you can build a road. The Afghani's are then vested in protecting these new 'luxuries' and are willing to defend them. "No." they say, "No, IED's on our road.". Or how to build a community that is motivated to fight to protect simple infrastructure development.
I also find it fascinating that the military in Afghanistan has no real excessively profitable resources (oil, etc.) to capture, by staying in Afghanistan. The US has used and abused the Afghan people for decades. One of the many bad outcomes of our War in Iraq, was neglecting Afghanistan. The Taliban was being pushed back, the people were hopeful, then we diverted resources to Iraq, and Afghanistan became an increasingly corrupt and dysfunctional government.
It is unbelievable to me, that folks like Tom Friedman who promoted every aspect of going into Iraq, is so clueless and heartless when it comes to how the Iraq War stifled any hope of fulfilling the promises that the US had made to the people of Afghanistan. It just makes me wonder if for Friedman since there is no loot to pillage, like there was in Iraq, then the effort to keep our promise to the Afghan people is not worth fighting for.

Afghanistan was on a positive track ...
until Obama took over. In less than a year he has nearly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Tpyical for a liberal on US national defense.

How can we take you seriously if your argument is Afghanistan was on the verge of 'victory' in '08?
You may as well say that gravity makes things go up not down or something equally inane like the President isn't really a US citizen.

Betcha a million dollars monopoly money that If a Republican were President right now implementing the exact same strategy as our current Democratic President, you would be saying we are making 'progress' in Afghanistan.

Oh, you're saying that victory in Afganistan was "just around the corner" on January 20, 2009 until Obama came along and screwed it up?
Remind me whether a Democratic or a Republican president did the following?
- Used incompetent Afgan mercs to hunt down OBL and then claimed not to be that concerned about him;
- Diverted special forces to Iraq;
- Playing footsie with the double-dealing Musharraf.
It's still Bush, all Bush. Or at least until Obama starts a war of its own.
My take
My take is that GR is doing some sort of Andy Kaufmann routine.

As someone who thought PF was a dude for quite a while but never bought into that BR = Centinel stuff, I thought it woudl be amusing to straighten out some preconceptions we might have about each other.

No see, we just have to feel guilty about it and want to be taxed more. But I wish. Actually if I made that kind of money I wouldn't want to brag about it.

The Sudanese in Copenhagen compare the Climate Draft Agreement' to a holocaust for the Sudanese people.
Sudan is an Arabic country where Islam is considered the main religion. The country has also been a hidey hole for bin Laden and his allies.
Is this progress? An Islamic nation is using the same flame throwing rhetoric to describe policies they oppose as 'the holocaust'. It seems like it an admission that the holocaust did occur. IN other words they are no longer holocaust deniers?
It also seems oDD that the Sudanese are using the same language as the tea partiers! Small world.

I think we're witnessing the beginnin of the "No Speech" Campaign strategy, where the candidate just gets on the stump to wink at the crowd. Look for Amy Adams to challenge President Palin (shudder) in 2016.

News of First Major Progressive Legislation in 30 Years Enrages Liberals
As the article from Gawker states: Shut up Liberals. Or should I say shut up please.
I swear if I hear the word public option one more time I am gonna barf.
It is 'the' public option vs government takeover of healthcare. This meme has obscured the debate and the details of the bill, many of which seem to be quite good.
http://gawker.com/5431385/news-of-first-major-progressive-legislation-in...
If getting stuck in an idealogical rut is bad for conservatives who have gone too far to the right, isn't it bad for liberals to be stuck on stupid, with this public option to the point of being completely blind to any other form of competition. Of course it is.

I'm not happy with the plan.
I don't understand how anyone can think that it'll be OK politically to mandate people to buy insurance when the Govt. isn't offerring up a nonprofit plan. Seriously....I was OK with the mandate when it was coupled with a low cost option prompted by the Govt. That got chucked but the mandate is still there?!? That's a wtf moment. I mean, that is going to lose votes.
We shall see
I don't think 'the plan' is nearly as bad (evil) as some on the left are suggesting.
I believe that individual states can have their own co-ops, to create a larger pool of customers, to offer cheaper insurance. This is essnetially an opt-in (public option ) without calling it that.
Patients bill of rights and a redirection of insurance towards rewarding wellness (cost saving) as opposed to treating the chronically ill.
I see lots of good things in this bill. My biggest concern is affordability, but I believe you can get subsidies if you are low income. The mandate is essentially a fair tax. Instead of asking only those on the higher income brackets to pay for those on the lower end, (almost) everyone is asked to pay.
At some point, I can see complications arising that could lead to a ruling that health care is a right, if you are a US citizen.
I'm only half stupid
Good point, kindness.
Your post is spot-on, here. It sounds like a very f**ked-up bill, and one doesn't have to follow it closely to realize that. NO Bill would've been far better than this rag of a health bill that'll be passed.
I'm so glad that I didn't vote either the Obama or McCain tickets a year ago last month at the polls. I saw all this coming long before the election, when Obama voted for the FISA Bill, promised to escalate our war on Afghanistan (which he most definitely has), and voted to continue funding our war on Iraq. The number of people who keep making excuse after excuse for Obama is sickening. The racism displayed by radical elements of the GOP is disgusting, but so's the ongoing love-fest for Obama.
Well, you go farther than me.
I wanted a plan that would have brought the US's healthcare costs in line with the rest of the industrialised world. Right now we pay more than double most the others.
Other nations achieve that either by (Switzerland, Japan) regulating every aspect of care and cost or by putting up a government/quazi government health care delivery system. There's no laize faire anywhere else in the world. Honestly I don't think it's right that the US pay for the rest of the worlds drug development costs. It should be spread out to everybody equally.
End of liberty....
Has anyone thought to ask the Canadians if they feel like their liberties have ended because they have health care provided by their country with a national sales tax on food?
Are Canada and England really hell holes of tyranny because of their health care system? Has it dawned on anyone that every time the GOP opens their mouths and utters their ridiculous claims about the end of liberty re: health care etc., they insult at least half the world?

Rahm's head on a platter?
Sounds like circumstances have made some really strange bedfellows:
Hmm... Both Jane and Grover think Rahm's a crook and should go.
And so it begins.
Rahm's a politician of the first water, so undoubtedly his hands are none too clean. Corruption in the highest levels of the Democratic Administration? Or IOKIYAD?
Sounds like a research project for GoRight.

She has lost a lot of friends on the left, and that was before she started palin around with Grover.

Jane & Grover?
I'm havin' a hard time swallowin' that one. I believe it I just think it's tone deaf on both their parts. I would have imagined they don't share a single thought. Grover hates anything that is Government (or costs any money) that doesn't support him & Jane thinks it isn't enough government. Yin Yang almost.
Not sure I'll be on tomorrow...Merry Christmas all.
Of course I also wish the non-christian & atheist world a very wonderful whatever it is those heathens celebrate....Man that's the spirit of christmas, eh?

And really, when it comes down to it, Christmas is spending too much money, fixing too much food, and perversely bemoaning the fact that we have more friends and family than we can possibly fit into a two-day long holiday :-)
We all do that, despite the reason.

Grandstanding while politicizing 'terror'
The recent rantings of the GOP, grandstanding and politicizing the failed xmas day terror attempt, serves to remind me once again how much I loathe and despise Republicans.
While flapping their gums endlessly running from camera to camera wetting their pants about doom and the end of something er other, the GOP just can't make enough political hay over recent events.
Most disgusting:
The GOP refused to vote for funds to beef up the TSA, yet are now whining cause the TSA is not beefed up! Classic hypocrisy.
Jim DeMint has had a hold on the newly to be appointed director of the TSA for almost a year now, yet brazenly wonders why the TSA is leaderless. Utter hypocrisy.
Horrors that Obama has not declared alleged terrorist an enemy combatant, stripped him of his rights, shipped him to GITMO and tortured said evil doer with the waterboard at least 45 times.
Most disgusting of all is the episode of Bush and the 'shoe bomber' where not one gooper whined about the shoe bombers lawyers, or the shoe bombers miranda rights, or the sentence he is now serving in a US prison where he could escape and kill your children on their way to kinder school.
What a bunch of fickle hypocritical bastards in the GOP.
The GOP and terror or how to use 'national security' for no other reason than just pure political grandstanding.
Thanks GOP for reminding me why I despise you and your ilk!

Out of the 2 major parties,
Out of the 2 major parties, the (D)'s have a plank in their eye, and the (R)'s have some piece of much larger timber in theirs (in general).
If a Rip Van Winkle Republican came back from just a 3 year sleep, and got to see only what Obama is doing in regards to the War on al Qaeda and their fundamentalist xenophobe allies, I'd put my money on Rip thinking Obama was a middle of the road Republican.

People are going to die (sez Mr Limbaugh)
if health reform passes.
The irony that Hawaii passed health reform in the 1970's very similar to the proposed reforms in the evil democrat health reform bill seems to have escaped our precious Rushbo.
Hawaii also has socialist hotels filled with union workers, socialist hospitals filled with union nurses where Rush claims that he was treated well.
It's a wonder Rush made it out of Hawaii alive... considering it is a state that embraces strong anti-business environmental regulations and is hornets nest of freedom hating socialists.
