Iraq Pulls Blackwater's Liscense

Blackwater liscense being pulled in Iraq

Interesting.

Tens of thousands of foreign private security contractors work in Iraq — some with automatic weapons, body armor, helicopters and bulletproof vehicles — to provide protection for Westerners and dignitaries in Iraq as the country has plummeted toward anarchy and civil war.

Monday's action against Blackwater was likely to give the unpopular government a boost, given the contractors' widespread unpopularity.

BAGHDAD - The Iraqi government said Monday that it was pulling the license of an American security firm allegedly involved in the fatal shooting of civilians during an attack on a U.S. State Department motorcade in Baghda.

I would guess that there will be pushback against this move by the US, specifically in regards to prosecuting members of Blackwater.

It is the economy, stupid.

…………

can they do that?

I mean pulling the license of an entire firm like that?

"To discuss evil in a manner implying neutrality, is to sanction it." AR

………… parent

That's a good question

Since their govt is said to be weak it is hard to say how much real power the govt has. They can pass a law, but can they enforce it.

The article states that Blackwater is unpopular in Iraq, because they are said to have killed a lot of Iraqi civilians in a lawless manner.

The politician that said 'Blackwater must go' is tapping into a populist sentiment among the Iraqi's. So maybe this is an issue of a 'common enemy' that will help unite the different factions in the Iraqi parliament.

Not sure if Blackwater might be viewed by the Iraqi's as a Christian Army. If so it creates another faction and another spark in the flame, in the oil mix of tribal loyalties, Sunni, Shia and Christian.

Blackwater USA was co-founded by former Navy Seal Erik Prince, a "billionaire right-wing fundamentalist Christian from a powerful Michigan Republican family. A major Republican campaign contributor, he interned in the White House of President George H.W. Bush and campaigned for Pat Buchanan in 1992. He founded the mercenary firm Blackwater USA in 1997 with Gary Jackson, another former Navy SEAL.

Blackwater USA America's Holy Warriors

If they are viewed as the Christian Warriors from America, it seems fairly clear that the shooting deaths of civilians on Sunday that were blamed on Blackwater, and many other incidents of civilian deaths that have been blamed on Balckwater, has the potential to cause of lot of problems.

But like I mentioned it is interesting that the Iraqi government might have found itself a populist issue that could gel the various factions against a common enemy.

It is the economy, stupid.

………… parent

OMG, it IS a holy war! (Not!)

See, once againhere you are with the holy crusade meme.  I though we discussed this yesterday:

Well, then, I guess it must NOT be a Holy Crusade

They shot and killed 9 people.

Apparently innocent civilians in this most recent example. You can be that if Wells Fargo did that today in any American City, they'd be out of the security business the next day here.

The Blackwater guys are mercenaries. It's not like they are some dignified group that demands our support. If they can't control their guys, they don't deserve the business.

………… parent

we went over this before

these "mercenaries" you speak of in such a flippant manner are almost all ex-Special Forces, Marines, or Army vets of the US military. Sure they are working for a private company now, but they are good people.

"To discuss evil in a manner implying neutrality, is to sanction it." AR

………… parent

You have no idea if they are "good people."

There are good people and bad people in all walks of life. Your statement is far too generalized.

If you really believe this is the "fight of our lives," how come you're not in Iraq?

………… parent

of course there are bad apples in all groups

but when I speak of a large groups of US military vets, I think of them as good people. Certainly not worth of being summarily disregarded as bad or evil or "undignified" mercenaries.

"To discuss evil in a manner implying neutrality, is to sanction it." AR

………… parent

We're talking about this case, Ender.

We shall see what the news brings, but they killed nine civilians.

If you really believe this is the "fight of our lives," how come you're not in Iraq?

………… parent

about this case yes

let's wait and see.

But in a hypothetical situation, if a regular US military convoy is attacked and when they fire back Iraqi civilians are killed, what should happen? Are they justified?

………… parent

These guys are taking orders from no one, Ender.

A military convoy operates under military rules. To compare the two situations is specious.

Hunters fight back ...

If you click through the NRA site to the actual article it is a good read.  I'll provide a subset of the points raised:

Our Honorable Hunters And The Pain-In-The-Butt Tree Huggers

  • Hunters donate tons of meat to food pantries, pay the fees that expand wildlife conservation programs, keep national parks preserved, and protect motorists’ lives.
  • Hunters are true nature lovers and conservationists and are the first to report poachers who disregard laws that protect wildlife and natural habitats.
  • Hunter-funded conservation groups are primarily responsible for bringing back American wildlife that was nearly extinct in the last century.
  • Hunting is safer than soccer, football, baseball, cheerleading and ping pong.
  • California game managers must wait ‘til a cougar threatens a human before they can rock its world. How sweet. Because of this brain fart, today the number of people that naughty cougars have killed has doubled from what it was before cougar hunting was banned.
  • Deer kill ten times the number of people as sharks, cougars, bears and alligators combined, as well as more than commercial airline, bus and train accidents combined.
  • When the greenies protected the alligators on Sanibel Island, Florida, the alligators ate the tree huggers and their dogs!
  • Bear attacks are at an historic high, and you’re more likely to be attacked by a bear where hunting isn’t allowed—like in a national park.
  • Bears with no fear of humans often attack after hearing gunshots—a diner bell that a deer or elk is waiting for them—and thanks to the tree huggers, hunters can’t do anything about it.
  • Aviation collisions with wildlife cost $500 million annually.
  • Livestock losses to predators cost $71 million annually.
  • Hunting protects trees from being destroyed by scavenging deer. Those trees help protect land from erosion and house songbird populations.
  • Vegetarians who don’t eat meat because they love animals are eating vegetables from farmers who kill deer, rabbits and vermin that would destroy the vegans’ lunch. Remember that, hypocrites, when you crunch your little baby carrots and worship your edamame beans.

I find the last point to be particularly funny.  :)

The Mountaineer loudly cleared his throat and arrogantly proclaimed, "You know, at WVU we learned to wash our hands after urinating."

"At Pitt, we learned not to piss on our hands."

Who's to blame for Global Warming? Jane Fonda, of course.

Seems that her anti-nuke crusade may have had unintended consequences:

'NYT' Sunday Preview: Jane Fonda to Blame for Global Warming?

By E&P Staff

Published: September 14, 2007 1:50 PM ET

NEW YORK In their regular "Freakanomics" column which will appear in this Sunday's edition of The New York Times Magazine, Stephen J. Dubner and Steven D. Levitt, pose this question: "If you were asked to name the biggest global warming villains of the past 30 years, here's one name that probably wouldn't spring to mind: Jane Fonda. But should it?"

The authors observe that Fonda's antinuclear thriller "The China Syndrome," which opened just 12 days before the Three Mile Island accident in 1979, helped stoke "a widespread panic." Fonda became a high-profile anti-nuke activist in an already-strong movement. The nuclear industry halted plans for expansion. "And so," they continue, "instead of becoming a nation with clean and cheap nuclear energy, as once seemed inevitable, the United States kept building power plants that burned coal and other fossil fuels. Today such plants account for 40 percent of the country's energy-related carbon-dioxide emissions.

"Anyone hunting for a global-warming villain can't help blaming those power plants -- and can't help wondering too about the unintended consequences of Jane Fonda."

Of course, there were many other factors in the nuclear industry decline, including cost over-runs, disposal of nuclear waste, the threat of terrorism and numerous other accidents beyond TMI. Then there was, ahem, Chernobyl. But the columnists cite the "big news" that with global warming fears mounting, "nuclear power may be making a comeback in the United States," with plans for two dozen reactors on the drawing boards.

Will they get built? The authors conclude that "it may all depend on what kind of thrillers Hollywood has in the pipeline."
