Person of the Year?
My picks for "Person of the Year". These are NOT my predictions for Time Magazine, which will probably choose "Mom & Apple Pie". These are, in order, MY picks. It was tough to order 1 through 5 because any of them would be good choices.
| 1 | Musharraf (for impact, positive or negative, on stability of a Muslim nuclear power nation that is also important to the war in Afghanistan and war vs. al Qaeda, and for impact on democracy in a nation of 170 million.) |
| 2 | Putin (for destroying democracy in Russia, setting himself up as lifelong puppet master, becoming more hostile to the U.S., and throwing his fossile-fuel weight around.) |
| 3 | Petraeus (for progress in Iraq, whether it ends up capitalized upon or just wasted) |
| 4 | Ahmadinejad and Khamenei (for all the problems those guys are causing) |
| 5 | Sudanese President Bashir (for showing that a nation can still get away with genocide) |
| 6 | Researchers who found a way to convert adult stem cells to cells acting like embryonic stem cells |
Whom would you pick for Person of the Year?

I think Putin had the largest impact worldwide
I'd also throw in Mahmoud Abbas (for marginalizing Hamas to Gaza and putting the PA in position to govern a truly independent West Bank), J K Rowling (for concluding the Harry Potter series and helping with the successful films), and Barry Bonds (for breaking the all time HR record and being indicted as part of the steroids scandal).
Come, my friends. 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world -- Tennyson
Putin it is
with Gore and Rowling as runners up.

I'd like to add Borat
I'd like to add Borat Sagdiyev.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon
for his leadership on a new pact on climate change, the "Bali Roadmap".
Or the unnamed activist from Papua New Guinea who spoke out against US entrenchment against participating by stating, "We seek your leadership, but if for some reason you are not able to lead... please get out of the way."
Here's a toast to activists and heretics seeking change around the world.
