Will this be the state of political discourse in America until November? It's starting to look that way (and I'm not speaking of discourse on SwordsCrossed, but elsewhere).
Obama Supporters:
| Definitely Valid | Possibly Valid / Possibly Invalid | Definitely Invalid | |
| Definitely worth hearing and worth stating loudly and often. | Anything positive about Obama. Anything negative about McCain. | Nothing | Nothing |
| Possibly worth hearing and stating | Nothing | Nothing | Nothing |
| Definitely not worth hearing or stating. | Nothing | Nothing | Anything positive about McCain. Anything negative about Obama. |
McCain Supporters:
| Definitely Valid | Possibly Valid / Possibly Invalid | Definitely Invalid | |
| Definitely worth hearing and worth stating loudly and often. | Anything positive about McCain. Anything negative about Obama. | Nothing | Nothing |
| Possibly worth hearing and stating | Nothing | Nothing | Nothing |
| Definitely not worth hearing or stating. | Nothing | Nothing | Anything positive about Obama. Anything negative about McCain. |

Not at all
There would be 2 more major categories of:
"People that Hate Obama"
"People that Hate McCain"
But the "People that Hate..." would fall into the related "... Supporters" before long.

Yeah, it's been interesting to watch that occur
To see Hillary backers move to Obama just because they can't stand McCain, or to see the many conservatives who bashed McCain during the primaries now support him over Obama.
It's perfectly logical, of course, to prefer someone from your party over someone from the other party, and even more logical to dislike the other party candidate that the person you wanted to win in the primary was hoping to defeat in the fall. Still interesting to watch people as they come to terms with what their options are, though -- there's a few that decide they won't back their party's nominee and switch sides.

I agree that that's a useful
I agree that that's a useful distinction. My sense, though, is that the folks who have the most rigid mindsets and most predictable commenting behavior are the supporters, rather than just the folks who dislike (or even hate) both, but hate (or hate more) the candidate of the other party. I could be wrong about that, but that's my sense. Either way, the basic point is still the same: mindless, reflexive, rigid partisanship in thinking and commenting.
Respectfully, again?
Huh?
